HONORING A LEGACY
Gloria & Eugene Harris

Gloria Harris was a trailblazer, servant leader, and woman of faith whose legacy continues to inspire generations. In 1987, she became the first Black person elected to the El Campo City Council, serving District 2 with integrity and dedication for 30 years. Before her historic tenure in public office, she served the community through El Campo ISD during a pivotal era of educational integration. Gloria believed leadership was rooted in service, compassion, and the courage to open doors for others.

Eugene Harris was a cornerstone of the El Campo community, a man of quiet strength and profound influence who dedicated his life to mentoring the next generation. As a trailblazer in local athletics, he broke barriers as the first Black coach and umpire in the youth baseball league, culminating in leading an El Campo Little League team to a historic All-Star appearance. Gene spent his career in the Texas oilfields with Texaco, embodying a tireless work ethic, and served his faith community with devotion as the Chair of the Deacon Board.
